Last night Glenn Beck had one of my favorite people on his show – Ben Stein. Now, if you don’t know Ben Stein’s background, you can get a quick overview on Wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Stein

This guy is brilliant, and he’s conservative and he’s right about almost everything. Almost.

So, when he was on Glenn Beck’s show, I had to watch. He made some interesting points.

The one that I found to be most compelling was how environmentalism is causing more human suffering than the environmental problems they are supposedly attempting to resolve.

Now, I don’t want to go off on a rant here, but I want to point out some of the high points of what he had to say.

  1. The drive to mandate the use of Ethanol in our fuel stream is causing grain prices to skyrocket. Here in the United States, it means we pay more for food. In places like Africa it means that people starve to death. Betcha feel pretty good about your Flex-Fuel vehicle now, don’t you?
  2. It is impossible to have an honest discussion of climate change. Scientists and politicians are unable to give honest assessments of the situation because the media and leftist environmental groups would demagogue them. IOW it would be professional suicide. So, despite their private skepticisms, they publicly tow the line.
  3. Environmentalists are Anti-American – oh, they’ll deny it, but the fact is that most people in the Environmental movement want to diminish the influence of the United States and put corporations out of business, while at the same time they hang posters of Che Guerva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Che_Guevara). These people are communists, and they are promoting a system of government that causes more human suffering, more environmental disasters than any other. They don’t really care about solving the “problem”, they care more about tearing down our country.
  4. True conservative politicians don’t really exist anymore. Instead we have government by the special interests, and for the special interests. Don’t believe me, go back and look at #1 again. Why do we use Ethanol in our gas tanks instead of batteries or hydrogen? The answer is simple: the farm lobby.

Here’s the good news. According to this article in Yahoo News: http://biz.yahoo.com/nytimes/080623/1194787839974.html?.v=1 traditional newspaper ad revenues are falling – down approximately 10% year over year for the last two years.

Why is that good news? Because as these large, consolidated newspapers fail one-by-one, the opportunities for opposing points of view will become greater and greater. We need it – the web is the Great Democracy, and the truth needs to come out even if the liberal press doesn’t like it.
